Alexander Rolls On For Tigers
WARSAW – Mother Nature, for the second straight day, forced the Northern Lakes Conference Girls’ Tennis Championships indoors Thursday night.
That didn’t matter one bit to Sarah Alexander.
The Warsaw senior rolled into the finals at No. 3 singles with a dominating win at the Warsaw Tennis and Fitness Center.
Alexander defeated Concord senior Holly Angel 6-3, 6-0 in one semifinal match Thursday evening to advance to the championship match.
Alexander is slated to face Plymouth junior Jessica Stillson in the title tilt at No. 3. Stillson defeated Northridge freshman Taylor Sellers 6-1, 6-2 in the other semifinal match Thursday.
Senior Sarah Boyle of the host Tigers lost her semifinal match Thursday at No. 2 singles. Elkhart Memorial junior Corinn Whittaker topped Boyle 6-3, 6-2.
The other semifinal at No. 2 singles saw Northridge sophomore Kylie Frauhiger defeated Goshen junior Kathleen Morical 6-0, 6-0. Frauhiger will face Whittaker in the championship match at No. 2.
Warsaw senior Jacqueline Sasso defeated Wawasee senior Katy Ashpole 8-5 in their match in the loser’s bracket at No. 1 singles. Ashpole, who did not get to play her first round match Wednesday night after rain forced the tourney indoors, lost 6-0, 6-1 to Goshen senior Miranda Kay Thursday.
The semifinals in the No. 1 singles bracket, which are slated for tonight, have Elkhart Memorial freshman Krystal Grubb facing NorthWood sophomore Sydney Wysong and Concord junior Jenna Landis taking on Goshen’s Kay.
Chelsa Carolus of Wawasee lost to Goshen senior Sarah Rush 8-3 at No. 3 singles Thursday.
The Warsaw No. 1 doubles team of senior Anna Hall and junior Camille Kerlin went 1-1 Thursday. Hall and Kerlin lost their first-round match 6-0, 7-5 to Northridge seniors Courtney Clark and Emily Erekson. Hall and Kerlin then topped sophomores Addison Ayres and Erin Wiktorowski of Wawasee 8-4.
The semifinals of the No. 1 doubles bracket will feature Taelor Gross and Haley Stouder of Elkhart Memorial versus the Plymouth pair of Savannah Mae and Ellen Smith. The other semi pits Kennedy Walter and Tori Schwartz of NorthWood against the duo of Clark and Erekson from Northridge.
The Tiger No. 2 doubles team of senior Abbi Baum and freshman Athena Schlitt won Thursday. They defeated junior Jaclyn Miller and sophomore Jazlyn Gehlhausen of Wawasee 8-0 in the loser’s bracket.
The semifinals at No. 2 doubles in round two say Madison Sheline and Alaina Donegan of NorthWood defeat the Northridge duo of Alexis Graber and Mackenzie Martin 6-1, 6-1. The other No. 2 semi had Libbie Portteus and Lanae Singleton of Plymouth top Michaela Searer and Alana Brubaker of Concord 2-6, 6-1, 1-0 (11-9).
The final round of the tournament is scheduled for tonight outdoors at WCHS, weather permitting. If not, the play will be moved indoors again to the Warsaw Tennis and Fitness Center for the third straight night. If play is not completed tonight, the finals will be finished Saturday at Concord High School.
