WCPL Analyzes Social Media Sites
Article by Laurie Voss, Warsaw Community Public Library
I did a quick search for the most popular social sites for May 2014, and it made me wonder how many Social Media sites are people on these days? Number one, of course, is Facebook, with 900,000,00 unique monthly visitors! I love this site, as it has reunited me with relatives that I seldom had contact with before. On the other hand, the drama that some people portray makes a person cringe. I do love the various groups that you can join though.
Following Facebook is Twitter, at 310,000,000 unique monthly visitors. This is something that I belong to, but I don’t use it. Who can get their point across in just the few characters that are allowed?
Third is LinkedIn, a job networking type of site. They have 250,000,000 unique monthly visitors. Again, I belong to that also, but don’t use it except to approve people who want to join me. I can see the good in it though, for people that are searching for employment.
Pinterest comes in fourth, at 150,00000 unique monthly visitors. I love Pinterest, but make myself stay away because this site is so addicting!
Fifth place is Google+ at 120,000,000 unique monthly visitors. I belong, I don’t get it. I have friends on it, they leave comments and YouTube clips. I still don’t get it.
Tumblr comes in sixth with 110,000,000 unique monthly visitors. Their headline reads “Follow the blogs you’ve been hearing about.” I did try to do a blog once. One initial and boring post, and I was like “Now what?” I even got a follower. I didn’t write anything good, so he must have been bored too.
I see a lot about Instagram, who ranks 7th at 85,000,00 unique monthly visitors. “Capture and Share the World’s Moments” is their motto. Share on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and more. But if I’m on Facebook, I can do that all there.
Number 8 is VK with 80,000,000 unique monthly visitors. They boast the largest European social network, and looks amazingly like Facebook.
Flickr has 65,000,000 unique monthly visitors and ranks number 9. This is another photo sharing site, much like Instgram.
Number ten is, wait for it…MySpace with 40,000,000 unique monthly visitors. Truth be told, I thought it was dead.
All in all, I will stick to my Facebook. Maybe I kind of like the drama, the self-pity and too-much-information type folks after all. Nah, I love looking at the photos and posts of my family and friends, both near and far.
