Warriors Plead The Fifth
ROCHESTER – Tippecanoe Valley had the home course working to its advantage. Wawasee, however, had its depth working as a fifth-man score was needed to resolve a 169-all tie Wednesday at Round Barn Golf Club at Mill Creek.
Having to go to the fifth score as the six-golfer compliments produced matching 169 four-man scores, Valley showed two 48s while Wawasee offered a two 45s, either of which were good enough to qualify the Warriors for the team win.
Wawasee’s Cal Heinisch was the low score for the round with a 40 and was followed by teammates Jeffrey Moore at 42, Mason Germonprez at 43 and Tristen Atwood an uncharacteristic 44. Atwood, who has nine-hole rounds of 36 and 38 under his belt this season, shot a 78 the night before to lead Wawasee at the Joe Harris Classic at Rozella Ford.
Rasmus Rich and Brandon Buss both carded 45s as the pick ’em fifth score for Wawasee.
Tippecanoe Valley had both Tanner Neeley and Bryce Zimpleman fire 41s while Josh Tucker shot in the sixth position and came up with a 43. Corey Carson added a 44 to get Valley to a 169. The Vikings then had Ben Shriver and Trevor Neeley both net 48s, providing its pick ’em fifth score.
The Valley JV were on point, shooting a 176 to beat Wawasee’s 212.
“We did not play our best tonight,” began Wawasee head coach Steve Coverstone, whose club still moved to 7-0 in dual matches this season. “We had trouble all around the greens. We also didn’t finish our rounds well. We are very fortunate to get the win, but our play has to improve.”
Both teams will take part in invitationals Saturday, Wawasee heading to the Homestead Invite while Tippecanoe Valley will compete in the LaVille Invite.
