Manchester University Celebrates Leadership Award Students
It’s an extraordinary student who can balance a college academic load with dynamic leadership in the campus community. This spring, Manchester University celebrates three undergraduate students who have mastered the challenge with 2014 Student Leadership Awards.
Two May graduates are 2014 Capstone Outstanding Senior Leaders for their significant contributions to the quality of campus life throughout their years at Manchester: Joseph Myers of Indianapolis and Betsy Varner of Yorktown, Ind.
Joseph Myers will graduate with a double major in English and writing with a minor in Spanish. His campus involvement spans MU campus life: He serves as president for Manchester Activities Council, as an attendant for Student Activities, is co-founder of iDance Party, sings in the A Cappella Choir and is a member of Black Student Union.
“Because of his helpful spirit and willingness to go the extra mile, along with his great success as a leader, Myers has won the respect and admiration of not only his peers, but faculty and staff alike,” says Shanon Fawbush, director of student activities and orientation.
Betsy Varner, a triple major in psychology, Spanish and religion, has served the Manchester community as chair of Campus Interfaith Board, Student Orientation Leader, lab assistant for the Department of Modern Languages and president of Alpha Mu Gamma foreign language honorary. She also studied abroad in Quito, Ecuador, and served as an assistant in the President’s Office and for University Public Relations.
“Betsy is a wonderful example of the kind of student Manchester hopes to graduate: one who has ability and conviction and will draw upon her education and faith to make the world a better place,” stated Kate Crell, assistant professor of religion.
The 2014 Outstanding Student Leader of the Year is junior Selamawit Nicolai of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She is president of the African Student Association and an executive board member of Students Today Alumni Tomorrow. The Dean’s List scholar also has served as secretary general of Manchester University Model United Nations and as programmer for campus Multicultural Affairs.
“The grace with which Selamawit executes her responsibilities and addresses any issue that arises is truly outstanding,” stated Merykokeb Belay, first-year biology-chemistry major.
