Warsaw Track Ladies Place Second
KOKOMO – A bid for yet another championship came up just short Saturday for the Warsaw girls track team.
The Tigers were edged out by Noblesville by a scant 3.5 points in the 90th running of the Kokomo Relays.
Noblesville, ranked No. 7, totaled 143 points to top the Tigers, who had 139.5 in the seven-team meet.
Warsaw, coming off a title in the Turtle Town Invitational at Churubusco last weekend, was going for a fourth straight championship at Kokomo.
Coach Scott Erba’s team, despite missing several performers due to school commitments and SAT testing, still put on a strong performance.
The Tigers notched three first-place finishes Saturday.
The team of Sam Alexander, Ann Harvuot, Jackie Fergoson and Nicole Eckert won the Sprint Medley Relay with a top time of 2:59.92. The foursome of Tennie Worrell, Claire Hickerson, Ferguson and Eckert won the 400 Shuttle Hurdle event in 1:10.12.
Alexander topped the field in the long jump with a top effort of 16-1 1/4.
Warsaw had impressive efforts with several personal bests. Included among those was Hannah Dawson, who was second in the 1,000 with a time of 2:50.46. Emily Bailey was third in the discus with a throw of 93-1 and also finished fourth in the shot put at 30-7. Megan Chauncey was fourth in the discus with a throw of 88-6. Hickerson was fourth in the 100 hurdles in 16.94 and Rebecca Lemon tied her personal best with a fifth place in the pole vault at 7-6.
Hickerson notched a second place finish in the pole vault by clearing 10-0. Ferguson was second in the 100 hurdles in 16.43 and Allison Miller was second in the 3,200 in 11:58.46.
The Tigers also got second place efforts from the Medley Relay team of Worrell, Mariah Harter, Aletheia Burritt and Brooke Rhodes in 9:49.69, as well as the Mid-Distance Relay of Haley Peterson, Claire Kehler, Kenzie Merchant and Madeline Hooks in 7:27.08 and the foursome of Anna Craig, Mallory Hooks, Charlene Orr and Lauren Orr in the 9th Grade Sprint Medley Relay in 3:18.08.
Harvuot notched a third place finish in the 100 in a time of 13.06. The 400 relay team of Harter, Alexander, Harvuot and Ferguson was also third in 52.83.
Northwestern was third in the final team standings with 82.5 points. Kokomo was fourth with 59, followed by Richmond (43), Western (39) and Marion (23).
Warsaw, which is undefeated on the season and 6-0 in the Northern Lakes Conference, hosts Goshen Tuesday night at 5 p.m. It will be Senior Night and the final NLC and regular season meet of the season.
The Tigers will then host the NLC Championship Meet on May 13, where they will be going for a ninth straight league title.
