Pilgrims Tip Tigers
WARSAW – The Warsaw girls tennis team opened league action Tuesday with a 3-2 loss to Plymouth.
The host Tigers won two of the three singles matches, but the Pilgrims posted a doubles sweep to claim the Northern Lakes Conference lid lifter.
Seniors Jacqueline Sasso and Rachel Alexander each collected wins to lead the way for the hosts.
Sasso won 6-1, 6-0 over Kelly Henderson at No. 2 singles for Warsaw. Alexander posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Jessica Stillson at No. 3 singles for coach Rick Orban’s squad.
Freshman Erin Hunter earned a point at No. 1 singles for the Pilgrims by downing senior Sarah Boyle 6-0, 6-2.
The Pilgrims won at No. 1 doubles as seniors Ellen Smith and Savannah Mae topped senior Abbi Baum and junior Camille Kerlin 6-3, 6-3. Plymouth also took the No. 2 doubles match as the team of Libbie Portteus and Kirstin Riise beat Anna Hall and Athena Schlitt 6-1, 6-2.
Plymouth improves to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in the NLC. Warsaw drops to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in league play.
Plymouth won the JV competition 14-3. Winners for Warsaw were Rosalia Fleming in singles play and the doubles teams of Greer Smith and Jenn Katris and Sherry Wong and Brooklyn Rummer.
Warsaw plays at NLC foe Northridge Wednesday at 5 p.m.
