Limitless Race: A Race For Everyone
On Saturday, April 26, an exciting, new race will be coming to Winona Lake.
Limitless Race, which is being hosted by Metzger Outdoors to benefit the Council for Exceptional Children Grace College Chapter and Winona Lake Limitless Park, is a race unlike any other in the county and, according to event organizer Matt Metzger, in the United States.
Limitless Race is exactly what its name implies — a race without limitations. Designed for those from all walks of life, the race allows both hardcore racers and those without any race experience to get involved. More over, the race, much like Limitless Park is set to be, is “all inclusive” allowing those who are physically or mentally disabled to participate without having a separate event.
“This is the first race of its kind … not only is it an adventure race, but it is inclusive,” explained Erin Porter, Winona Lake limitless park committee chair. “It accommodates those with disabilities as well. The only other race like this we found is in Canada.”
Racers are given two hours to complete not only the race, but a series of unique and top-secret, quirky challenges that are designed to challenge participants both mentally and physically. Though not all of the details about the fun and wacky challenges are being released, event organizers says that, during the race, a team member may have a sensory handicap of some kind they must overcome.
Teams will be comprised of two to six members and will receive a map before the race and will navigate, via the route of their choice, to locate checkpoints and encounter surprise challenges along the way.
Proceeds from the event will jointly benefit both the Council for Exceptional Children, a premier education organization that strives to improve education and quality of life for children and youth with exceptionalities, as well as Limitless Park in Winona Lake.
The Limitless Park project will include the renovation of the current park in Winona Lake through a four phase process. The new park will include a splash pad, year round restrooms with showers and an inclusive playground for people of all ages and abilities. The plan will also include Trailhead facilities, which will allow those who bike from within and out of the community to have a place to stop, rest and clean up after time on the trails. Porter stated the park will be added paths for the lakes and beach, a special needs day camp during the summer, and expanded summer programming for grades kindergarten to 12.
Limitless Race will take place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. this Saturday. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. For those wishing to get involved with the race, a prize is available for those who pre-register. A drawing for those who pre-register will be held for a Surftech Bamboozle stand-up paddle board.
