Lincolnway Pinewood Derby Winners
On Friday, March 14, 41 Cub Scouts raced their cars in the 2014 Lincolnway District Pinewood Derby, held at Harrison Elementary School in Warsaw. The Lincolnway District consists of Whitley and Kosciusko counties.
Cars raced down the track at speeds of up to 235 mph, that is, in scale for the 5-ounce cars.
The scouts work with an adult partner to build the cars from kits and follow specific guidelines to ensure a fair race. The cubs have competed in two races so far, one at the pack level and this one, at district. They will have one more chance to “race in the chase” at the council level.
“It is really very exciting,” said Mike Skeens, the district executive for Lincolnway. “The Cub Scouts race on three different types of tracks, providing a real challenge to setting up the cars.”
Tiger Scout Nolan S. said, “I like starting the race!” Every Scout who races gets to start at least one race. “Working with my dad on my car was the best,” said Ethan H.
Boys start Cubs Scouts in first grade and continue through the fourth grade. Now is a good time to join. Information about Cub Scouts can be found at www.awac.org.
