ECSD Search For Police Impersonator
Police in Elkhart County are on the look-out for a police impersonator.
According to the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department, a female victim called 911 shortly after 10 p.m. Monday after she was pulled over by what she first thought was a police vehicle.
The incident occurred on CR 17 at the U.S. 20 Bypass interchange around 10:15 p.m. The woman reported being pulled over by a white male driving a small white passenger car. The woman observed a red and white flashing light coming from the car and pulled to the side of the road.
Once stopped, a white male wearing baggy blue jeans and a black hooded sweatshirt with the hood up, approached the woman and indicated he stopped her for speeding. The victim asked for the man’s police identification, which he could not produce. At that time, she immediately drove away and called 911. The impersonator fled the area before legitimate law enforcement officers arrived.
In the state of Indiana, a police officer, sheriff’s deputy, state trooper or any law enforcement officer initiating a traffic stop will either be in a fully marked police vehicle with red and blue flashing lights. If the police vehicle is not fully marked, the vehicle will have red and blue flashing lights and the officer will be in a uniform properly identifying themselves.
Any questions about the legitimacy of the person stopping you should be asked. Officers carry proper identification. Immediately call 911 if you have any doubt. And, if at all possible, always stop in well lit sections of the roadway.
