Have you ever looked at a puzzle and a piece or two of the puzzle was missing? You could still tell what the picture was, but it was incomplete.
Success in anyone’s life, career or business is like a puzzle. There are many pieces which must fit together to create the grand design. Some pieces are small and some are big, but they all are important. We can still tell what the picture of success looks like if pieces are missing, but it is incomplete.
One piece of success often missing from our lives is simply serving others. What do I mean by serving others? I am talking about doing something for others without thought of what can you get in return. However, serving others always will always have a return to us. It is the immutable law of sowing and reaping. The central point though is to serve without thought of what you might get in return. Here is a great quote about serving:
“It is one of the most beautiful compensations of life, that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
Emerson says there is a beautiful compensation in serving others. What does he mean by compensation? There are many ways we are compensated by serving others. Let me share just a couple with you.
One of the most important forms of compensation we receive from serving others is feeling good about ourselves. We feel good because we are able to lend a hand to someone in need. It may be as simple as holding the door for a stranger who has their hands full. We feel good on the inside for simply being a help to someone in need.
Serving others may be something which takes more effort and time on our part. It may be going to visit people who are not able to get out very often – maybe going to a local nursing home to visit those who can’t get out at all. I believe the more effort and commitment we make in our serving, the greater the ‘good feeling’ we will feel.
Another form of compensation is when we do good for others we often have unexpected good things happen to us. I think little things happen like this every day we just don’t recognize them. When you open the door for someone who has their hands full you probably don’t relate it to when someone holds the door for you in a similar situation. These things don’t appear to be related to each other, but remember the law of sowing and reaping
Do we ever receive compensation as a direct result from serving others? Absolutely! I want to remind you when I talk about serving I am talking about doing something for them without the thought of what will they do for you. Keeping that in mind, there are times when we serve and do things for people and they in return do something for us without being asked.
I cannot tell you how many times I was ‘just serving’ someone, without thought of what I would get in return, and it led to a relationship with them or someone they knew which ended up being a profitable one to me personally. I wasn’t maneuvering to position myself to find some sort of gain. It just happened because I chose to serve someone else.
Is serving a missing piece to your life’s success puzzle? Is your puzzle incomplete? Whether small or large, what can you do to serve others and make your life’s puzzle complete?
