MARION – There is still over a foot of snow on the ground in most places, but spring sports are already underway. Wawasee’s boys and girls track teams haven’t begun to run outside yet, but competed in a pair of indoor settings this weekend and made impressions both nights.
Saturday at the Hoosier State Qualifier at Indiana Wesleyan University, the combo of juniors JJ Gilmer and Clayton Cook posted wins. Gilmer won the high jump and placed third in the long jump while Cook was tops in the 60-meter high hurdles and was third in the 60-meter dash. Both athletes posted times in the two-weekend combo, which will pick up again next weekend with qualifiers at Trine University in Angola, that are among the top-five in the state. Gilmer and Cook, according to Wawasee head coach Scott Lancaster, should qualify for the indoor state meet March 22 back at Wesleyan.
Friday night in an unattached Culver Military Indoor Invitational, Wawasee’s boys won the quad with 137 points, besting New Prairie’s 132, CMA’s 75 and Knox’s 10. Cook broke the meet record in the 45-yard high hurdles (5.7) and won the 40-yard dash (4.6). Gilmer added a win in high jump (6’6″) and Cole VanLue claimed the 220-yard dash at 26.6.
The Wawasee girls also raced at Culver, with Catherine Yankosky taking top prize in the 40-yard dash (5.4) and placed runner-up in the 220-yard dash at 30.3. The Lady Warriors scored 53 points for fourth place overall in the team standings, behind CGA (126), New Prairie (95) and Plymouth (87). Knox was fifth at 20.
