Bourbon Residents Caught In International Scam
What started as an online romance for two separate Bourbon residents has reportedly turned into an international internet scam.
According to 1050AM, The Chief, Bourbon Police Chief Bill Martin reported discovering that, seemingly unbeknownst to them, two people from Bourbon had become involved with a scheme to move stolen goods purchased with stolen credit cards.
The pair reportedly began an online relationship with individuals in Russia who claimed they wished to visit the United States to meet the local residents. The scammers then stated that, in order to visit, they would need to raise the funds.
Conveniently, the individuals noted they had a plan to raise the money by selling goods, but added the company selling the goods would not ship to Russia. The scammers then asked the Bourbon residents to take the pre-paid and pre-printed labels provided by the scammers, put them on boxes shipped to their address and ship them to Russia.
1050 AM noted Martin indicated the Bourbon residents are not being held liable as they were only placing labels on the items and did not realize the goods were stolen. Martin also stated that after one individual questioned the Russian scammer, the scammer became aggressive and stated they would file charges against them if they didn’t ship the merchandise.
According to Martin, one of the Bourbon residents had over $6,000 of merchandise that had not yet been sent to the scammers and reported he had already sent roughly 20 boxes filled with goods to Russia. Martin is reportedly in the process of contacting the FBI.
