Grace Track Team Sets Records
BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – The Grace Colllege track and field teams continued to peak at the end of the indoor season as four school records crumbled at the NCCAA Indoor National Championships over the weekend.
Nathan Brown broke his own school record in the heptathlon and the long jump, and Jo Boren had a part in two records as well.
“We had several PR’s and a couple of school records, so we continue to improve,” said Grace head coach Jeff Raymond. “The quality of the competition at the NCCAA meet has improved drastically in recent years, so I’m pleased that we are competing at that level. We will now have a few weeks to get refreshed and ready for the outdoor season.”
Brown set the school’s long jump record during the heptathlon when he leaped 22-feet-5.25. He went on to finish fifth nationally in the heptathlon in a school-record total of 4,416 points.
Boren placed 10th out of 25 runners in the 400-meter run, crossing the finish line in a Grace-record time of 1:00.72. She then joined Erin Jones, Katelyn McCullough and Alicia Hertzler in the 4×200 to place eighth in 1:48.91, shattering the previous record by over a second.
Boren also had a personal-best distance of 33-9.25 in the triple jump, and Jones ran her fastest 400 race at 1:03.20.
Other top-eight finishes for the Lady Lancers included Victoria Gimben’s seventh place in the high jump and the seventh place finish for the 4×800 relay team of Jenna McClellan, McCullough, Allison Zylstra and Rachel Fehring.
On the men’s side, Jonathan Rex was eighth in the mile run, finishing in a personal-best 4:32.02. Donovan Graham (10th, 800m) and Lance Taylor (11th, 400) had strong showings, and Tyler Back tossed a personal-record 42-3.5 in the weight throw.
Grace’s track and field program will next transition to the outdoor season. The Lancers’ first outdoor meet is the Huntsman Relays in Crawfordsville, Ind., on March 22.
