Wawasee Gymnasts Competitve At Jeff
LAFAYETTE – In continued prep for the sectional season, Wawasee’s gymnastics team met with several new faces at the Lafayette Jeff Broncho Invite.
Wawasee placed seventh overall in the team standings with 93.25 points. Standing atop of the medalist podium at Jeff was Plymouth, whom was the only common team on Wawasee’s schedule from the 14-team field, and ironically, this Tuesday’s opponent. The Lady Pilgrims led all teams with 101.65 points, besting Harrison (West Lafayette) at 99.75 and Lake Central at 99.475.
The Plymouth duo of Nicole Davis and Cassi Quissell were all over the leaderboards at the Broncho, taking top spots in four of the five categories. Davis was tops on vault at 9.175 while Quissell owned floor at 9.6. The duo went one-two on bars, with Quissell at 8.85 and Davis 8.625 and both were one-two in all-around scoring with Quissell at 35.85 and Davis at 35.4.
Wawasee’s Emily Allen cracked the top ten in three categories, placing eighth on vault (8.65), eighth on floor (8.6) and tenth in all-around at 32.275. Allen was also 11th on beam at 7.75. Taylor Busse gave Wawasee its other top-ten score with an 8.025, eighth-place finish on bars.
Abby Hancock of Harrison won the beam competition with a score of 9.025.
Other notables for Wawasee included a season-best score of 7.9 on floor from Haleigh Smarr and a no-fall beam routine from Jadelyne Skelton, which pulled a 6.875.
“This is always a fun meet for us to come to, we get to see a lot of teams we don’t see any other time of the year,” said Wawasee head coach Nika Prather. “This time of the season we are really starting to focus on sectionals. We have a couple more meets to work on things but we are really down to the wire.”
Wawasee’s next line of focus will come against Davis, Quissell and the rest of the Plymouth team Tuesday at home. The meet in Syracuse, which initially was scheduled for Plymouth but has since been moved to Wawasee, will begin at 6 p.m. in the WHS annex gym.
