Pilots Rally To Top Lancers
MISHAWAKA – Logan Irwin’s basket with 3:06 remaining gave the Grace College men’s basketball team a 62-58 lead against rival No. 15 Bethel on Saturday.
But the Lancers (16-13; 8-10 Crossroads League) missed their final seven shots of regulation, and the host Pilots ended the game with 11 unanswered points to rally for the 69-62 win.
The Lancers will be the No. 6 seed heading into next week’s CL Tournament. Grace will travel to third-seeded Huntington on Wednesday 7 p.m. for the opening round.
Grace’s defense was strong throughout Saturday’s game, holding Bethel’s high-scoring offense to 17 points below its season average. The Pilots (23-7; 12-6 CL) were stifled into 2-of-18 shooting from the 3-point line in the game.
The lead changed hands multiple times in the first half as neither squad went on top by more than six points in the opening 20 minutes.
Grace, who made five 3’s in the first half, took a 31-29 lead at the halftime break.
Bethel’s offense picked up momentum to start the second half. The Pilots scored 23 points in the first 10 minutes after halftime, opening up a seven-point edge over the Lancers.
Greg Miller then spearheaded a surge in his final regular-season game. The senior forward scored seven of Grace’s points during a 10-1 run that put Grace on top, 55-53.
Grace was in position to pull off the upset of their 15th-ranked rivals with three minutes to play, but the team’s final three-minute drought spoiled that chance. Five of Grace’s seven straight misses down the stretch were from the 3-point line.
Miller finished with 17 points, 10 rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals, and Irwin had 17 points and five assists without a turnover. Niko Read joined Miller and Irwin in double figures with 12 points, and Caleb Featherston and Kyle Fillman chipped in seven points apiece.
For the game, Grace made 35 percent of its field goals compared to 41 percent for Bethel. The Lancers also took 14 fewer free throws than the Pilots.
