Wawasee Sports Wrap – Feb. 8
Frosh Cagers Defeated
The boys freshman basketball team dropped a 32-24 final at Angola Saturday.
Rylan Kuhn scored seven points and Cameron Schlabach had five to pace the Warriors.
Wawasee, now 8-8, will take part in the NLC Tournament at Warsaw on Feb. 15.
Gymnasts Compete At Lakeland
The Wawasee gymnastics team posted a seventh-place finish Saturday in the Lakeland Invitational.
Fort Wayne Carroll claimed the team title in the 13-team event with a score of 103.6. DeKalb was runner-up with a score of 102.65. The Warriors were seventh with a 92, while Warsaw placed 10th with a 77.25.
Molly Smith was the top placer in the all-around competition for Wawasee with a total score of 30.65. She was also the team’s top finisher in the beam competition with a 7.25 and scored an 8.20 on the floor exercise routine.
Emily Allen had the top score for Wawasee in the vault (8.4), bars (8.0) and floor exercise (8.75). Taylor Busse scored an 8.0 on the bars routine.
Wawasee will compete at Warsaw Monday and then host Elkhart Central Thursday.
Ladies Hoops Team Falls To Pilgrims
The Wawasee girls basketball team wrapped up regular-season and conference play with a 46-34 loss at home to Plymouth Saturday.
The hosts trailed just 17-16 at halftime of the Northern Lakes Conference contest. Plymouth outscored the Warriors 17-5 in the third quarter to take control.
Kylee Rostochak poured in 18 points to lead the way for the Warriors. Erin Wiktorowski had six points and Hannah Haines five for coach Kem Zolman’s squad.
Nicole Horvath scored a game-high 19 points to pace Plymouth. Haley Harrell scored 13 points and Hunter Stevens 11 for the Pilgrims.
Wawasee closes out the regular season at 2-16 overall and 1-6 in NLC play. Plymouth stands at 13-6 and 5-2.
Plymouth won the junior varsity game by a 47-16 final.
Wawasee plays NorthWood Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Class 3-A NorthWood Sectional. Plymouth faces South Bend Clay, also Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., in the Class 4-A Clay Sectional.
