There’s no doubt that area wrestlers who step on to the mat for the regional round Saturday will have their work cut out for them.
A total of 20 grapplers from Warsaw, Tippecanoe Valley and Triton will be among the competitors in the Rochester Regional.
Headlining the field at Rochester will be the entire team from No. 3 Penn. The Kingsmen dominated the Mishawaka Sectional last Saturday with eight individual titles en route to their fourth straight sectional crown. All 14 Penn wrestlers earned a spot in the regional.
Tippecanoe Valley had the strongest showing among area teams in the Plymouth Sectional last weekend with a third-place finish in the final team standings. The Vikings had seven individuals earn a top four finish and a berth in the regional led by champions Cody Runyon (145) and Garrett Bell (170).
Warsaw also had a fine performance at Plymouth. Freshman Kyle Hatch was the lone champion for the Tigers at 106, but coach Justin Smith’s squad also had seven young men earn regional qualifying spots.
Triton will be represented at the regional by six competitors.
Action is slated to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at Rochester High School. The top four finishers in each weight class earn a spot in the Merrillville Semistate on Feb. 15.
Whitko has four wrestlers headed back to Fort Wayne Carroll Saturday for the regional there. The Wildcats placed seventh in the sectional at Carroll last weekend, led by a second place finish by Jake Rothgeb.
The Carroll Regional also begins at 9 a.m. Saturday with the top four finishers in each class advancing on the Fort Wayne Semistate at the Coliseum on Feb. 15.
Goshen will also serve as a regional host Saturday. Qualifiers from the Elkhart Memorial and Westview sectionals will hit the mat at 9:30 p.m. at Goshen.
