Concord Deep Freezes Cold Tigers
DUNLAP – A frigid second-half scoring performance put the chill on the Warsaw boys basketball team Tuesday night.
Host Concord dominated the final 16 minutes en route to trouncing the Tigers 49-25 in a Northern Lakes Conference contest.
The Minutemen, who won for the seventh straight time, outscored Warsaw 25-6 in the final half.
Filip Serwatka poured in 24 points and Ramon Johnson added 14 as the hosts improved to 11-3 overall and 4-1 in league play. Concord still has NLC games left at home versus NorthWood Feb. 8 and at league leader Northridge (5-0) Feb. 13.
Warsaw suffered its worst loss in seven years and scored the fewest points since totaling 24 in a setback to Alexandria during the 1960-61 season.
The Tigers played for the second straight game without juniors Rashaan Jackson and Nick Sands. Jackson, the team’s No. 2 scorer, and Sands, who had not played this season due to an injury, were suspended for 10 games last week due to a violation of the school’s athletic code.
Warsaw trailed just 24-19 at halftime Tuesday night. The Minutemen then outscored the Tigers 11-1 in the third quarter and closed with a 14-5 edge in the final frame. Warsaw shot just 2-14 from the field in the second half.
Concord shot 18-33 from the field in the win. Warsaw finished 9-26 and also had 16 turnovers. The Minutemen hit 11-14 free throws, while Warsaw was just 1-2 from the stripe.
Tim Swanson scored 12 points to lead the Warsaw offense. Nate Pearl had six. Paul Marandet netted four points and Jake Mangas three for the Tigers. Jordan Stookey, the top scorer for the Tigers, finished with no points.
Warsaw won the junior varsity contest by a 35-28 final. Kyle Mangas produced 13 points and Jeremy David seven for the JV Tigers, who improved to 11-2.
Warsaw plays at conference opponent Elkhart Memorial Friday night. Concord hosts NLC foe NorthWood Saturday.
