Gerald E. Showalter
Gerald E. Showalter, 85, of Warsaw, Ind., passed away at 8:20 a.m. Monday, Feb. 3, 2014, in Kosciusko Community Hospital, Warsaw.
On March 21, 1928, he was born in Middlebury, Ind., to Noble L. and Edna May (Kauffman) Showalter. Gerald graduated from high school in Millersburg, Ind., class of 1946. He was united in marriage to Lois Maxine Cary on June 26, 1948, in Goshen, Ind. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 – 1955. During his service in the military, he was on the Timber Bridge Committee and was an instructor on how to build and tear down bridges.
Gerald worked for Indiana Farm Bureau Hatchery, Goshen as a general hatcheryman and fieldman. He then worked for Cobb Inc., as a hatchery manager with responsibility in feed mill and purchasing. In 1958, he transferred to Gainesville, Ga., to open up a hatchery. He became area manager in 1964 for production and sales for the southeast area. During this time, he was active with the Georgia Poultry Federation. In May of 1966, he joined Arbor Acres Farm, Inc., in Thorntown, Ind., where he was general manager and was responsible for 60 employees and supervised two leghorn salesmen for the same area. In November of 1972, he joined Creighton Brothers, Warsaw, where he was in charge of egg processing which included managing Crystal Lake Egg Processing and Creighton’s Egg Packing Operation. In 1994, he retired from Creighton Brothers, Inc.
He was a member of the Presbyterian Church where he served as a Past Deacon and Elder and he also was a member of the Elks Lodge and the Rotary Club.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years: Lois M. Showalter, Warsaw; two children: Rodney (Cynthia) Showalter, Indianapolis, Ind.; Anne Showalter, Warsaw; one granddaughter: Casey Showalter, Indianapolis; two sisters: Charlene Christophel, Goshen; Esther Deal, Goshen; two brothers: Glen (Rose Ann) Showalter, Goshen; and Dale (Janet) Showalter, Goshen.
He was preceded in death by a sister: Vesta Stroman; two brothers: Stahly Showalter; and Jay Showalter; and three brother-in-laws: Theron Christophel, Tom Deal and Albert Stroman.
Services will be at a later date. There are no visitation hours planned.
