Art House Gives Indies An Audience
Did you see the new documentary about the secretary of The Beatles, “Good Ol’ Freda?” How about “Samara,” a film Roger Ebert described as not only “a head trip,” but a “rather noble film?”
While neither of these films have been blockbuster hits, that is exactly the appeal to Art House Cinema. The newly opened, non-profit, independent film theatre is bringing critically acclaimed movies, like those mentioned above, to the big screen in downtown Goshen.
“I realize a lot of people are hesitant when they hear the words, ‘independent film’,” said Ellyn Church, Art House’s manager. “They think the film will be too artsy or abstract, but that really isn’t so.”
With six screenings over a two week span, each film shown on Art House’s single, big screen is selected by a committee based on what has sold well and what has received awards at major film festivals. While those not following the independent film circuit are most likely unfamiliar with the titles showing at Art House, that does not make the films any less spellbinding or view worthy.
Also housed in the same building, under the Art House auspices, are GoProv, an improv comedy group, and New World Players, a local theatre troupe. There is also a dance studio in the space.
“Medora” will show at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, and 10 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9. It is appropriate for all ages.
Art House is located on the second floor of 211 S. Main St. in Goshen. The entrance is in the back of the building, near Back Alley Brewery and Shoobedoo Salon, accessible off Third Street. For more information and show times, go to www.gah.mobi or text “GAH” to 555888.
“We want to hear from the community on which films they’d like to see, too,” said Church. “Suggestions are welcome.”
