Warsaw Win Streak Stopped
FORT WAYNE – The winning streak came to an end Wednesday night for the Warsaw girls basketball team.
Host Fort Wayne Carroll edged past the Tigers 47-44 in a non-conference contest.
Warsaw, which had won its last four games, drops to 6-8 on the season. The Chargers, who had lost four of their last five games prior to Wednesday, improve to 4-11.
The game was close throughout. Warsaw led 13-11 after the opening quarter before Carroll took a 21-19 halftime lead. The Chargers held the game’s largest lead at 32-24 in the third period before Warsaw used an 11-3 run to tie the game at 35-35 heading into the final frame.
The Chargers outscored Warsaw by a 12-9 count in the final stanza to notch the win.
Seniors Nikki Grose and Brooklyn Harrison continued their strong play of late to lead Warsaw. Grose had 15 points to go with nine rebounds, five assists and five steals. Harrison also netted 15 points and also had four assists and three steals.
Junior Pam Miller scored six points and led the Tigers with 10 rebounds.
The Chargers won despite committing 24 turnovers. The hosts hit 7-19 from 3-point range, while Warsaw was 2-12 from distance. Carroll also hit 6-14 free throws, while the Tigers were 2-5 from the charity stripe. Warsaw did have 19 turnovers in the loss.
Carroll shot 17-46 overall from the field and Warsaw finished 20-54. The hosts had a commanding 41-30 rebounding advantage.
Eryn Leek and Vicki Harris each scored three points for the Tigers. Courtney Farling had two.
Madison Peterson tallied 14 points and Kierstin Murphy scored 11 to pace Carroll. Each player connected on three treys for the Chargers. Jacqueline Quade added 10 points for the hosts.
Carroll won the junior varsity contest by a 29-28 final.
Warsaw plays at Northern Lakes Conference foe Goshen Saturday night. The Tigers are 1-2 in NLC action. Carroll hosts New Haven Saturday night.
