Vikings Win, Salute Andrews
AKRON – The Tippecanoe Valley boys basketball team collected a win and honored a milestone moment both Saturday night.
Tanner Andrews played a big part in both too for the Vikings.
Valley edged past Plymouth 44-42 in overtime in a non-conference contest on the hardwood.
Logan Britton hit the game winner in the extra session to lift the hosts to the victory.
The Vikings put together a late rally to force the overtime. Plymouth led 34-30 with less than a minute to play in the game before Valley’s Tanner Andrews hit 1-2 free throws. The Pilgrims then misfired on two free throw attempts and Chainey Zolman converted a pair for the hosts to make it 34-33. Plymouth then hit 1-2 free throws before Andrews hit a layup at the final buzzer to tie the game at 35-35.
Valley improved to 6-2 on the season, while the Pilgrims dropped to 4-5. Plymouth, which lost at Elkhart Memorial Friday night, was still without 6-9 standout Mack Mercer. The Belmont University recruit has been sidelined due to illness.
Andrews led the Vikings with 13 points. Robby Groom scored 11, while Zolman had eight and Britton seven.
Freshman Nick Felke netted 12 points and senior Tom Felke eight to pace the Pilgrims.
The Vikings also honored senior star Andrews. The standout forward was saluted for scoring his 1,000th career point. Andrews reached the milestone on Jan. 3 during a 58-43 loss to NorthWood in the semifinals of the Winning Edge Holiday Tournament.
Andrews, a three-sport standout at Valley, becomes just the 11th player in school history to score 1,000 points. He joins Nick Kindig, who reached the mark last season, along with Trey Eaton, Ron Dittman, Scott Johnson and Brandon Eaton on the boys’ side. On the girls’ side, Rebekah Parker, Staci Groom, Hannah Krueger, Kara Kramer and Cathy Welch have reached the mark.
The Viking program will have another milestone come Tuesday night. Valley coach Bill Patrick is slated to coach in his 1,000th career game when the Vikings play at conference foe Northfield.
Patrick, who is already in the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame, is 719-280 in his 45th season. His 719 wins ranks second among active boys coaches statewide and is fourth all-time. Patrick is 241-100 in his 16th year at Valley, where he has guided the Vikings to 10 Three Rivers Conference titles, six sectional crowns and one regional championship.
Valley plays at Northfield Tuesday in a game that was postponed Friday night due to the fact that Northfield was still not in school due to the winter storm earlier in the week. The Vikings then host TRC Rochester Friday night.
