UPDATE: Kosciusko Level 3 Emergency Still Active

(UPDATE: As of 5 p.m. this afternoon (Tuesday) Kosciusko County’s Level III Travel Warning will be downgraded back to the Watch Level. Kosciusko County Government Offices will reopen at 8 a.m. Wednesday.

Marshall County is terminating its Warning Level at noon today. Whitley County will go under a Level II Watch as of 5 p.m. Tuesday. Elkhart County’s emergency declaration expires at 6 p.m.)

Early Sunday morning, Kosciusko County Commissioners President Ron Truex signed a Level III Emergency, meaning all travel on unincorporated roads in the county is prohibited, except for the purpose of emergency response and travel to and from work. Unincorporated roads are those not maintained by a city/town or the state, but by the county highway department.

The declaration is in effect until further notice and recognizes the significant snowfall which has been aggravated by high winds and extremely cold temperatures.

Per the Indiana Code as part of this declaration, fines associated with ignoring the declaration could be handed out by law enforcement. According to Kosciusko County Emergency Management Director Ed Rock, Sec. 34 of IC 10-14-3-34 notes that a person who “knowingly, intentionally, or recklessly violates this chapter commits a Class B misdemeanor.”

The declaration can be read HERE.

UPDATE: Kosciusko Level 3 Emergency Still Active — 15 Comments

  1. This is where the Commissioner’s declaration and the INDOT travel status map do not agree. According to INDOT there is to be no travel except emergency personnel. Which is right?

  2. I thought a level 3 Emergency was NO vehicles except for emergency vehicles were allowed out and not even people travelling to and from work were allowed on the roads? Am I wrong in this now?

  3. I am so gratefull for your site. So we can keep track of things going on while we are not there, Thank you.

  4. What weather your having out there. I am thankful for your site so we can keep track of what”s going on while we are not there. Hopefully when we get back we can have some fresh snow, if we can get back coming across I-80.

  5. What is ready stupid is Ron truex makes that dicision but then his plant that he runs make people go to work today isn’t that a
    contradiction

    • It seems that Mr. Truex thinks that his little declaration trumps the Indiana government’s statutes. It is clear that all travel is supposed to be not happening. Someone is confused.

  6. Warning is clear from http://www.in.gov

    (A) refrain from all travel;
    (B) comply with necessary emergency measures;
    (C) cooperate with public officials and disaster services forces in executing emergency operations plans; and
    (D) obey and comply with the lawful directions of properly identified officers.

  7. The county figures our lives are less important than the profits of the companies that reside here. THAT is why they wait so very long to declare an emergency.
