Sand Leads LCA Ladies
GOSHEN – Rachel Sand led the way as the Lakeland Christian girls basketball team finished as runner-up in the Bethany Christian Holiday Tournament Saturday.
Sand scored a game-high 13 points as the Cougars opened the tourney with a 47-37 win over South Bend Trinity.
The Cougars led 17-13 after the opening quarter before outscoring Trinity 14-7 in the second period of play to take control.
Hannah Remington and Hannah Delp each scored 10 points for LCA in the win. Julianne Haines netted seven points, while Morgan Holsclaw had four, Maryl Gerst two and Melissa Goss one.
Rachel Cramer led Trinity with 12 points.
Bethany Christian defeated Elkhart Christian 47-13 in the other first-round contest.
The host Bruins then defeated LCA 54-17 in the championship game. Bethany Christian led 21-2 after the first quarter of the title tilt.
Sand scored eight points and Remington had six to lead the Cougars. Haines netted two points and Holsclaw one for LCA.
Hanna Hochstetler scored 18 points and Jordan Helmuth 11 for Bethany Christian.
Trinity defeated Elkhart Christian 41-37 in the consolation game.
Sand was named to the All-Tournament Team for her play for the Cougars.
LCA is now 3-6 on the season, while Bethany is 5-6. The Cougars play Granger Christian Jan. 3 at noon in their own Cougar Classic Tournament at LCA.
