Wawasee Sports Wrap – Dec. 21
The official open to the Wawasee gymnastics season took place Saturday morning in another time zone. Wawasee senior Emily Allen scored an 8.75 on floor and 7.75 on bars to lead the team at the LaPorte Pairs.
Matched up with some of the top teams in the Region, Wawasee did not score any competition points on the day. Chesterton won the Pairs title with 17 points, followed by Portage (13), Logansport (11), Crown Point (9), LaPorte (5) and Lowell (0).
Allen and pairs partner Deea Coy had their floor score place sixth overall and bars score seventh overall. The other top-ten score for Wawasee came from the pair of Taylor Busse and Madeline Batista on bars, a 7.2 for tenth in the category.
Top scores at the event were a 9.5 on vault from Portage’s Danielle Solis and Krystal Fitchett; 9.45 on bars from Logansport’s Kelley Platt and Emily Pomasi; 9.6 on beam from Chesterton’s Brandi Tuzinski and Jordan Kearby; and 9.5 on floor from Tuzinski and Kearby.
“This was a great meet for the girls to see where they are and what they need to work on,” stated Wawasee head coach Nika Prather. “This being a pairs meet really takes out all the pressure and lets them just go out and have fun.”
Wawasee will venture into the new year with its next duty Jan. 4 at the Blazer Invite at Elkhart Central’s Warehouse in Elkhart.
Lions, Indians Impressive At Wawasee Invite
Bremen had a great showing at the Wawasee Boys Swimming Invitational Saturday at the Wawasee Middle School Natatorium, winning seven of the 12 events.
Bremen won the medley relay (1:44.28) and 400 freestyle relay (3:20.65) while Krent Hueni and Nolan Filchak each won two events. Hueni took honors in the 200 free (1:49.57) and 100 free (49.42) while Filchak was tops in the butterfly (53.13) and 500 free (4:56.89). Bremen diver Beau Beeson was best with his score of 191.95.
St. Joe’s Chris Bals was a double winner in the individual medley (2:00.50) and breaststroke (59.50) and watched his teammates win the 200 free relay (1:32.24).
Patrick Kays of Rochester won the 50 free (22.85) and teammate Steve Newton took the backstroke at 56.00.
Team scores were not given for the Invite.
Wawasee’s best showings came in the form of two third-place scores. Mylon Betts accumulated 139.70 points in diving while Zac Hershberger swam a 1:07.47 in the breaststroke.
Listed with personal bests at the Invite for the Warriors were Jacob Tucco in the IM and butterfly, Ethan Knepp in the 50 and backstroke, Owen Donahoe in the 500 and Logan Brugh posted a season best in the 500.
Wawasee’s next boys swim meet will take place Jan. 7 when it hosts Northridge.
Warrior Frosh Slip Past Lakeland
Wawasee moved into the freshman boys basketball holiday break with a 39-31 home win Saturday morning against Lakeland.
Adrian Crabb and Allen Miller scored eight points each while Tim Conley led the way with nine points.
“It’s good to get back on the winning track. The first half defense was really good. We had balanced scoring throughout the team,” stated Wawasee freshman coach Vince Rhodes.
Wawasee (5-3) will play again Jan. 11 against Manchester.
