Harris Powers Warsaw Victory
MICHIGAN CITY – Vicki Harris turned in a big performance to pace the Warsaw girls basketball team to a convincing win at Michigan City Saturday afternoon.
Harris popped in a game-high 18 points as the Tigers rolled to a 59-38 victory over the host Wolves.
Harris, a junior, hit 7-12 shots from the field, including 1-3 on 3-point tries, and connected on 3-5 from the free throw line. She also had six rebounds for the Tigers.
The Tigers used a big second-half effort to pull away. The game was tied at 14-14 after the opening period and Warsaw led 26-22 at intermission. Warsaw outscored City 33-16 in the final half, including by a 16-6 count in the fourth quarter.
Coach Michelle Harter’s team, which improved to 2-3 with its second straight win, shot 24-56 from the field and 7-11 from the line in the win. City was just 16-45 from the field and 4-7 from the stripe.
The Tigers had a balanced offensive attack in the win. Brooklyn Harrison netted eight points and Page Desenberg and Pam Miller each scored seven. Eryn Leek and Erin Clemens each score six points and Kilee Slone had five for the Tigers. Desenberg also had seven rebounds and Miller grabbed six caroms.
Senior Nikki Grose, the top returning scorer from last season for the Tigers, did not play in the non-conference victory. Grose was out due to a concussion suffered in the Whitko game on Nov. 29.
The host Wolves, who drop to 2-4 on the season, had 29 turnovers in the contest. The Tigers had 19 miscues in the win.
Michal Miller led the Wolves with 12 points.
The Warsaw junior varsity team remained undefeated Saturday with a 52-13 win.
Warsaw hosts Wabash Tuesday evening. The Tigers open Northern Lakes Conference play at Plymouth next Saturday night. Michigan City hosts Lake Central on Friday night.
