Movie Review: The World’s End
I know how the title sounds but this movie is the third flavor in the Cornetto trilogy created by Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg. It is a comedic satire such as the previous two films Hot Fuzz a police satire and Shaun of the Dead a “pre-zombie craze” satire.
These are also the same guys that created the English BBC series Spaced. The Cornetto is an inside joke because each of the three films is connected to a certain flavor of Cornetto Ice Cream. Shaun of the Dead was strawberry for its red color, Hot Fuzz was blue original for its police reference and The Worlds End is mint chip in its nod to aliens.
The Worlds End is a blast of a movie involving a group of friends that are coerced into trying to complete a 12 bar pub crawl by an old friend Gary, played by Simon Pegg, in which none of them have seen in years. It’s an ambitious undertaking that they attempted (and failed at) in their youth.
Their inability to have at least one pint at all 12 locales has perturbed at Gary ever since. So he bullies and cajoles his old pals – Andy (Nick Frost), Steven (Paddy Considine), Oliver (Martin Freeman) and Peter (Eddie Marsan) – to join him for a trip down memory lane while conquering The Golden Mile.
They are joined along the way by Oliver’s sister, Sam (Rosamund Pike), who once had a fling with Gary and who has long been loved from afar by Steven. As the boys are going from pub to pub they start realizing that things aren’t quite what they seem in their old stomping ground. People are a bit off and everything looks the same. I am pretty sure they were making fun of how the modern world has no original thinking anymore an each pub copies off the next.
As Gary is visiting the loo he encounters a young resident of the village and starts to heckle him. After he receives no response from the young man he tries to start a physical altercation and accidentally knocks his head off. As he is freaking out about his discovery the rest of his friends soon follow and they are all met with a battle royale of robot copies. Trying to play it of like nothing happened as to avoid the possible body snatching of themselves, they casually continue the pub crawl and each pub is met with more than they bargained for when they accepted The Golden Mile challenge.
Overall thoughts:
As with the other two titles in the Cornetto Trilogy I loved this film. I will say it may not be for everyone as I know there are a lot of people out there who do not like British humor. I love the silly slapstick genres so it goes without saying that I resonate with these jokers.
The plot is homage to Dr. Who and invasion of the body snatchers with a bit of silly twist at the end. I recommend this, but know if you’re looking for a scifi or end of the world movie this is not one of those films. It is a satire and only gives nod to the genres.
I rented this from the local Family Video and it is on demand or Apple TV.
I give it 8.5 out of 10
