Goshen Picks Park As Football Coach
GOSHEN – Goshen High School has turned to a familiar name to try and revive its struggling football program.
Kyle Park, the son of former Goshen football coach Brad Park, was named the school’s new football coach Monday night.
Park, a 1997 GHS graduate, replaces Mike Cheviron. Cheviron resigned earlier this month after three seasons as the Goshen coach, including an 0-10 mark this fall. The Redskins were 6-25 overall and 4-17 in the Northern Lakes Conference under Cheviron.
The younger Park has spent the last seven seasons on the staff at Zionsville High School. He served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Eagles for the last five seasons. Park played quarterback for the Redskins during his prep career and went on to play at Ferris State University in Michigan.
Brad Park coached the Redskins from 1993-2002 and is tied with Ken Mirer for most wins in GHS football history with 81, The elder Park was 81-34 at Goshen, including an 11-1 mark in his final season.
The Redskins have struggled mightily since Park retired after the 2002 season. The program has had six different head coaches since then and has won just a total of 38 games in 11 seasons.
Park is the second son of a coach to be named to take over an NLC football program in recent weeks. NorthWood, also earlier this month, hired former Panther star Nate Andrews to replace Scott Hoover, who also resigned following the 2013 season. The younger Andrews, who had been the coach at Western High School near Kokomo, is the son of former NorthWood Hall of Fame coach Jim Andrews.
