UPDATE: Man Killed By Police After Pursuit
(UPDATE: The name of the individual who was shot and killed Sunday by officers with the Elkhart City Police Department has been identified as Christopher James Ryckeart, 31, of Elkhart. Ryckeart was allegedly backing his truck into the path of officers as they attempted to place him in custody after a vehicle pursuit.)
At the request of the Elkhart City Police Department the Indiana State Police are investigating a shooting that involved officers Sunday night in Elkhart. As part of the department’s protocol, an outside agency was called in to complete the investigation.
Around 8 p.m. Elkhart City Police officer’s attempted to stop a blue and gray 1995 Chevrolet pickup truck for a traffic violation in the city. The truck was also reported stolen.
The driver of the truck refused to stop for police and led units from several departments on a chase that lasted more than 40 minutes. The pursuit took officers into Michigan before returning to Elkhart where it ended with the driver being fatally shot behind a house in the area of 4th and Marion streets. The subject, who was shot by Elkhart City Police officers, died as a result of the gunfire.
In all, three Elkhart City Police officers discharged their guns at Ryckeart. Ryckeart died at the scene.
The names of the officers involved in the shooting will be released over the next 24 hours by the Elkhart City Police Department.
