NLC Releases Final Fall All-NLC Lists
GOSHEN – With just one Northern Lakes Conference team still alive from fall sports – Concord football – NLC secretary Larry Kissinger late Monday afternoon issued the final lists for its all conference teams. Lists for volleyball, boys and girls soccer as well as football were released. The girls golf, boys and girls cross country as well as boys tennis lists were all announced following the sports’ respective conference tournaments earlier this fall.
Girls Soccer
Warsaw (4-2-1) had six players make the list, four of them to the first-team. Senior goalkeeper Abby Schue led the list for the Lady Tigers, along with junior midfielders Brooklyn Jackson and Danielle Hutcherson and sophomore forward Elizabeth VanWormer. Warsaw had two make the Honorable Mention All-NLC list in defenders Zoe Smyth, a senior, and junior Clair Snodgrass. The Tigers were able to reach the regional round before losing to conference rival Northridge.
Wawasee (0-7) had two defenders make the list, with junior Caitlin Clevenger All-NLC and sophomore Maddie Birch Honorable Mention All-NLC.
Northridge ran the table at 7-0 and made the deepest tournament run, reaching the regional finals before losing to Penn. The Lady Raiders had 10 players make the respective lists while Goshen (5-1-1) had six crack the lists.
Northridge coach Bill Redinger was named Coach of the Year.
Boys Soccer
Warsaw’s conference season didn’t pan out the way the team had hoped, finishing 4-2-1 and tied with Concord for third place. The Tigers, however, made the deepest run of any conference team, reaching the semi-state round before losing to Crown Point. Warsaw landed three seniors on the All-NLC first-team, with defenders Stephen Kolbe and Miguel Riveral along with midfielder Matt Williams earning honors. Senior midfielder Zack Tucker and junior forward Ernesto Cuellar both were named Honorable Mention All-NLC.
Wawasee (2-4-1) caps its season with senior midfielder Fernando Camargo and senior defender Michael Pena on the first-team list. Senior midfielder Rasmus Rich earned an Honorable Mention All-NLC nod.
Goshen posted a 7-0 season in the conference and led the charge with nine players on the lists, six on the first-team. Northridge at 5-1-1 had six tabbed and Concord (4-2-1) had five selected. The Raiders knocked off Goshen and Concord in the sectional and reached the regional final before losing to Warsaw.
Goshen coach Viratham Mounsithiraj was tabbed as Coach of the Year.
Volleyball
Warsaw continued to be an area force in volleyball, but finished third in the NLC with a 5-2 record. Seniors Laura Craig and Emily Poe along with junior Katie Voelz were named to the All-NLC first-team for the Lady Tigers.
Wawasee continued to struggle in NLC play, falling in all seven of its contests and had just junior Alli Ousley crack the lists with an Honorable Mention All-NLC nod.
Elkhart Memorial rose to glory again in the conference, running 7-0 and winning the title after placing fourth last fall. The Lady Chargers had five make the lists, four taking All-NLC awards. Northridge were 6-1 and had four representatives. No NLC school were able to get out of the sectional round this season, with Memorial the only to play in a sectional championship before losing to Elkhart Central.
Elkhart Memorial coach Jacquie Rost was named Coach of the Year.
Football
It came down to the final week of the regular season, but Concord’s 28-0 win against Warsaw gave the Minutemen (6-1) the NLC title over the Tigers (5-2), which tied Plymouth and Northridge for second place in the standings.
The Tigers placed five on the All-NLC first-team and three on the Honorable Mention All-NLC list. All five first-teamers for Warsaw were seniors in wide receiver Tanner Balazs, linebacker/tight end Seth Fouts, strong safety Gabe Furnivall, linebacker Kyle Heckaman and running back Tristan McClone. Senior lineman Stuart Wagner, senior linebacker Marcos Rodriguez and junior lineman Ben Plummer were named Honorable Mention All-NLC.
Wawasee (4-3) had four named first-team in senior defensive back/wide receiver Austin Lutz, senior linebacker/fullback Braxton O’Haver, junior quarterback Gage Reinhard and junior wide receiver/kick returner Clayton Cook. Senior lineman Dusty Akers and senior running back/safety Brandin McCulloch were both added to the Honorable Mention All-NLC list.
Concord is the lone NLC team still alive in the state tournament, and will head to Rice Field this Friday night to play Elkhart Central for a 5A sectional championship. The Minutemen had 10 of its players named to the lists, with eight Northridge Raiders and eight Plymouth Rockies also frontlining the conference stars.
Concord’s Tim Dawson and Northridge’s Tom Wogomon were named Co-Coaches of the Year.
