Poyner Performs Well At ACC Meet
Former Warsaw distance standout Jake Poyner turned in a strong performance Friday for Wake Forest University in the ACC Cross Country Championships.
Poyner, a 2013 WCH graduate and Wake Forest freshman, placed 58th overall in the first-ever event hosted by the Demon Deacons in Kernersville, North Carolina.
Poyner covered the 8K course in a time of 25:22.1 as Wake Forest placed 10th in the 14-team championship meet.
Senior Alexander Rose led Wake Forest by placing 43rd overall in a time of 25:05.3. Junior Connor Crowley was 44th overall in a time of 25:06.6.
Poyner, the son of Tim and Sue Poyner of Winona Lake, earned All-State honors in cross country his senior season in 2012 by placing sixth at the State Finals for the Tigers. He led Warsaw to a program best fourth-place finish a year ago. Poyner was third in the 1,600 and fifth in the 3,200 at the Track State Finals this past June as the Tigers earned a fifth place team finish.
Andrew Colley of North Carolina State captured the individual title Friday with a top time of 23:37.9. Martin Grady of Notre Dame was fifth overall in a time of 24:13.2.
Syracuse won the ACC team championship with a score of 64. North Carolina was second with an 84 and Notre Dame third with a 105. Wake Forest posted a team score of 274.
Poyner and his Wake Forest teammates return to action Nov. 15 in the Southeast Regional in Charlottesville, Virginia. The team will attempt to qualify for the NCAA Championships slated for Nov. 23 in Terre Haute.
