Grace Sweeps Goshen
GOSHEN – The Grace College volleyball team ended the 2013 regular season on a high note, sweeping Goshen in convincing fashion on Wednesday evening.
The Lady Lancers (19-15; 9-9 Crossroads League) held the Maple Leafs to a .088 hitting percentage, winning 25-16, 25-21 and 25-17.
In the opening set, Grace seized a commanding 16-6 lead to set the tone for the match. Grace pounded out 15 kills on just four errors in their nine-point victory.
The Maple Leafs (9-23; 3-15 CL) stayed within striking distance for much of the second set, leading 11-10 midway into the game. But five straight points gave Grace a cushion to hold on for the 25-21 win.
Although Grace led for the majority of the third set, Goshen made a late push to trail 20-17. Grace Woolsey sparked the Lady Lancers, however, with two service aces, and Megan Johnson ended the match with a kill.
Calah Kruse notched her 15th double-double of the season for the Lady Lancers with 14 kills and 14 digs. She was joined in double figures by Dana Johnston who added 13 kills on a .345 percentage. Ellie Harp passed out 33 assists in the three-set victory.
Hannah Clemmons, the reigning CL Libero of the Week, continued her strong play with 16 digs, and Kaitlin Kerrigan chipped in with 14 digs.
Woolsey’s three aces and Jessica Scherb’s two aces highlighted Grace’s serving efforts.
As a team, Grace recorded 13 more kills, 11 more digs and 8 more assists than Goshen.
The Lady Lancers will await the final draw for the 2013 CL Tournament. Grace tied for fifth place in the league standings with a 9-9 record. Check back on GCLancers.com for tournament updates.
