Syracuse Public Library Announcements
We Americans think of November as the month that culminates in a feast with family and friends. November is a month of other celebrations as well.
Nov. 11, is a national day of appreciation for veterans. The Syracuse Public Library will be open. The library has a fully maintained history section with books about the Revolution through the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. Look for reading ideas by the adult circulation desk.
Sadie Hawkins Day would be more popular here at the library if we weren’t recovering from Halloween. This is a fictional holiday that was created in the Li’l Abner comic strip. Party ideas are together on the shelves for easy browsing.
Across the Atlantic, the English Parliament has designated Nov. 5 as Guy Fawkes Day. The intent is to celebrate the government foiling a plot to blow up parliament in 1605, but it is a day of mischievous revelry. Also known as the gun powder plot it is the setting for volume 15 in the Daisy Dalrymple series. The movie, V for Vendetta, recreates the event in a future dystopian society. November is a good time to have parties and bonfires.
Thanksgiving is late this year. There is time to research new recipes with many delightful cooking ideas for the holidays. The Syracuse Library has cookbooks for special types of diets; from vegetarian, gluten-free or low sugar to traditional or extravagant, there are hundreds of book choices.
Join a Meeting
Young people, in grades 6 to 12, are encouraged to share their reading finds with other teens at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5. Young adults can relax with new books, choose a board game and eat snacks. Teens should be aware that many of the new books also have an accompanying audiobook. Audiobooks free ones hands while listening to the latest story.
Story times continue meeting through November at 10:30 a.m. Mondays and Tuesdays. Fall is a great time to come to the library for things to do. Caregivers and preschool children can find many pre-reading activities at the library. The new picture books are on top of the shelves, and so easy to find.
Book Buddies meet at 1 p.m. Thursdays. Children ages 18 months to 5 years (accompanied by a responsible adult) are invited to come for an hour of activities. Each family is given a free book and learning materials.
