They are calling it Checkmate Hunger and it’s the first of its kind for Warsaw Community Schools.
The event, a fall chess tournament for both students and adults, is being held as a benefit to feed the needy in Haiti. Checkmate Hunger is being hosted at Madison Elementary School, 1436 W. 300 N., Warsaw, on Saturday, Nov. 23. Registration is from 8 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. with the first pawn played at 8:45 a.m.
A total of 7 unrated sections divided by grade level (K-1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7-12), 1 unrated section for adult players and 3 rated sections are being offered. There will be a minimum of rounds played in each section with play for unrated sections to be finished by about 2 p.m. and all other play to wrap up by 5 p.m.
There is no fee for spectators. Students of WCS can play for $3 and players outside of WCS will pay $5 for play. Concessions during the tournament are being provided by A.C.T.S.
