Triton Sports Wrap – Oct. 3
A strong Plymouth team and the weather put an end to Triton’s boys tennis season Thursday night.
The defending champion Pilgrims took a 3-0 lead over the Trojans in the semifinals of the Bremen Sectional before inclement weather suspended play.
The semifinal match will be finished today at Plymouth, as will the other semifinal pitting host Bremen versus Glenn. The championship match will then be played following the conclusion of the semifinals.
Plymouth, which has won 16 straight sectional titles, won at No. 1 singles and both doubles spots Thursday before the storms arrived.
John Hunter of the Pilgrims topped Dean Howdeshell 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 singles to lead Plymouth.
Plymouth, which finished as runner-up in the NLC to Warsaw, got wins from Matt Flynn and Max Holloway at No. 1 doubles and the team of Ryan Johnson and Braydon Davidson at No. 2 doubles.
The team of Flynn and Holloway defeated Lucas Shafer and Darren Harrell 6-1, 6-3. Johnson and Davidson stopped Jake Oldham and Austin Sellers 7-6 (7-3), 6-1.
The No. 2 and No. 3 singles matches were suspended.
The winner of the Bremen Sectional will face Manchester Tuesday in the Culver Academies Regional. The other semifinal will pit the Warsaw Sectional winner vs. the Culver Academies Sectional winner. The regional championship match is scheduled for Wednesday.
Cross Country Teams Compete
The Triton boys’ cross country team placed third and the girls’ squad fourth in the Marshall County Meet Thursday night.
Glenn won the boys’ meet with a score of 39. Culver Academies was second with 51 and Triton third with 64.
Luke Runyon of Glenn won the boys’ race in a time of 17:!8.
Bryce Wanemacher placed fifth overall to lead Triton in a time of 18:26.
Derek Johnston was 11th in 18:48, followed by teammates Bailey Watkins in 13th (19:08), Landon Kaufman in 15th (19:12), Cordell Sherow in 20th (19:42) and Junki Park in 37th (22:34).
Culver Academies won the girls’ team title with a score of 20. Bremen was second with 57, Plymouth third with 62 and Triton fourth with a 105.
Hannah Beggelin of Culver won the girls’ race in 21:15.
Courtney Burns led Triton with a 14th place finish in 23:52. Kayleigh Craig was 19th in 24:36, followed by Makayla Musilli in 22nd (25:21), Taylor Hatfield in 24th (26:00), Michaela Best in 26th (26:09), Aimee Gladieux in 29th (26:55) and Megan Hayes in 31st (27:57).
Time Change For JH Football
The Triton Athletic Department has announced that its’ junior high football game Oct. 8 will be at 5 p.m.
The Trojans will host LaVille on Tuesday at 5 p.m. instead of at 4:30 as originally scheduled.
