Yoder Sets Another Record, Warriors Roll
While Wawasee’s high school cross country teams were running toward big days at the huge Culver Academy Cross Country Invitationals Saturday, the middle school teams from Wawasee were also given the chance to show what they could do.
Both the Wawasee boys and girls middle school teams won championships at Culver Academy, with the girls taking the varsity title with 49 points, outdistancing Northridge’s 87 points. The boys compiled 73 points, besting runner-up Chesterton’s 88 points. Both fields had 40 teams running. Even the JV races had Wawasee excellence, with Parker Bame winning the boys race and Kaia Manning taking the girls event.
Leading the girls to victory was another school-record performance from Carmen Yoder, taking first place overall in the varsity race with a time of 11:09.8, lowering her already-held Wawasee middle school mark, and missing the Culver Academy race record by one second. Yanelly Pizana was eighth and Aubrey Kuhn ninth to pace the Lady Warriors.
In the boys race, Luke Griner was second and Brady Robinson eighth to help the Warriors to victory. Winning the boys race was Lakeview Middle School’s Eduardo Calderon, who set the new course record with a time of 9:57.9.
Wawasee and Lakeview will reacquaint on Tuesday with Edgewood joining for the races at WMS.
