(EDITOR’S NOTE: Please be advised that we will not be publishing the woman’s name. The act of attempting or committing suicide is the result of mental illness and therefore the woman’s identity will not be shared as part of this news report.)
A 20-year-old Columbia City woman sustained life-threatening injuries when she allegedly attempted to commit suicide by train at the Fort Wayne Street railroad crossing in downtown Warsaw.
Emergency crews from Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory, Warsaw Police and Multi-Township EMS were dispatched to the scene at about 9:55 a.m. for a female who “threw herself under the train.” Warsaw Police Lt. Kip Shuter tells StaceyPageOnline.com the woman sustained an amputated arm and other life-threatening injuries.
Initially, Lutheran Air was called to land in Central Park to fly the victim, but MTEMS then advised they would transport her by ground to Parkview Whitley Hospital in Columbia City where she was then flown by Samaritan 1 to a Fort Wayne hospital. Emergency personnel who asked not to be identified said Lutheran Air was not able to start the helicopter and, for an unknown reason, paramedics on scene disregarded Samaritan 2, which is located just 7 minutes away by air in Rochester.
Warsaw Police say the woman had been staying at the women’s homeless shelter in Warsaw.
Train crossings from Center Street and to the north were closed in Warsaw for about 2 1/2 hours while the investigation continued.
