Coon, Glogovsky Pace Champions
MARION – The Warsaw boys cross country team probably opened a few eyes on Saturday.
If they didn’t, then people must not be paying much attention to just how good the new-look Tigers are this season.
The Tigers got great performances from Ellis Coon and Owen Glogovsky to win the Marion Invitational.
Coon collected individual champion honors as the No. 14 Tigers topped No. 4 Fort Wayne Carroll 81-103 to lay claim to the team title.
Warsaw, which notched a fourth-place finish at the State Finals in 2012, had lost to Carroll 50-65 in the Huntington Invitational Aug. 24. The Tigers were coming off a first-place effort Tuesday to win their own invitational.
Coon continues to show that he’s among the elite runners in the state. The competitive senior star covered the course Saturday in 15:21 for his third victory in three races this fall. Coon, who was All-State last year with Jake Poyner and Robert Murphy, missed most of the spring track season due to a foot injury.
Coon’s impressive performance Saturday set a new school record.
Glogovsky notched the fastest sophomore effort in program history to place 14th overall in a time of 16:16.
Nick Bergen was 19th overall in a time of 16:29 for coach Jim Mills’ squad. He was followed by Daniel Messenger in 20th (16:30), Tyler Houvener in 23rd (16:46), Jonathon Beres in 50th (17:13) and Avery Torres in 77th (17:58).
Nick Adams was the top runner for the Tigers in junior varsity action. He placed fourth overall in a time of 17:41. Jacob Adley was 11th (17:55), Jacob DeBoest 13th (17:57), Ryan Goon 17th (18:08), Ethan Cook 38th (18:52), Curtis Rider 45th (18:56) and Zachary Taylor 53rd (19:03).
Warsaw hosts Elkhart Memorial and Goshen Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in the Northern Lakes Conference opener at the new course at WCHS.
