Lancers Continue Winning Ways
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Grace College volleyball team continued its incredible start to the 2013 season with two more victories at the Embry-Riddle Tournament.
By beating Talladega and Southern University of New Orleans, the Lady Lancers racked up their eighth straight win to start the 2013 season. Grace’s eight-match winning streak marks the best stretch since 2011 when the team won 12 straight.
Grace made short work of Talladega in Saturday’s first match, winning 25-11, 25-16 and 25-13. The Lady Lancers held the Tornadoes (0-3) to a negative hitting percentage of -.151. Grace, conversely, hit at a clip of .395.
Dana Johnston continued her outstanding tournament by leading all players with 13 kills on 20 attempts (.550 percentage). Megan Johnson pounded out seven kills, and Annie Salazar had a pair of service aces.
In Grace’s final match in Florida, Ellie Harp directed a strong offensive attack against SUNO. Harp dished out 49 assists in four sets, placing three of Grace’s hitters in double figures for kills.
The Lady Lancers won 25-19 in the first set and 25-22 in the third to take a 2-1 advantage.
Grace stayed in front for the majority of the fourth set before SUNO made a push to steal the game in the latter stages. The Lady Knights seized a 24-22 advantage, but Alix Underwood and Megan Johnson saved the set for Grace. Underwood produced a kill and a block, and Johnson added two kills as Grace won the final four points of the match.
Johnson led all players with 14 kills and a pair of block assists. Dana Johnston finished with 11 kills and six block assists, and Calah Kruse added 10 kills and seven digs.
Hannah Clemmons led all players with 18 digs, and Jessica Scherb (nine digs) and Kaitlin Kerrigan (eight digs) were strong on the back line as well.
Freshman Grace Woolsey also produced nine kills on 18 attempts.
The Lady Lancers return to Indiana and gear up for the start of the Crossroads League schedule. Grace will host rival Taylor on Wednesday in their league opener.
