Betty Chumbler
Betty Chumbler, 87, of Winona Lake, Ind., and formerly of Valparaiso, Ind., passed away at 5:38 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, at Grace Village in Winona Lake.
She was born Dec. 18, 1925, in South Wales to Thomas Childs and Catherine (Thomas) Childs. On Feb. 14, 1945, in South Wales she was married to Willard Chumbler, who survives in Winona Lake.
She was born and educated in South Wales. After she was married she returned with her husband to Northwest Indiana in 1946. She spent her married life in Gary, Merrillville and Valparaiso. She worked for Sears in the Clerical Department for 25 years retiring in 1985 from the Merrillville, Ind., location.
She had been a member of the Central Baptist Church in Hobart, Ind., since 1947, where she was involved in the nursery, Sunday School, and in the church office. Betty had been a resident of Kosciusko County, Indiana for the past two months.
She is survived by her husband: Willard Chumbler, Winona Lake, Ind.; a son: David Chumbler, Dayton, Ohio; one daughter: Rosemary Courtney, Warsaw, Ind.; three grandchildren: John Thomas Chumbler, Lakeland, Fla.; Chris Courtney, South Bend, Ind.; Matt Courtney, Costa Mesa, Calif.; one great-grandson: Damon Chumbler; and her sister: Eileen Edwards, South Wales.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.
Private family visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3, at Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, 225 Argonne Rd., Warsaw. Her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. CST Wednesday, Sept. 4, at Central Baptist Church, 704 W. 700 N., Hobart, Ind., and officiated by Pastor David Webb. There will also be visitation an hour prior to the service from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. CST at the church. Burial will follow at Graceland Cemetery in Valparaiso.
