Golfers Post Impressive Win
The Warsaw girls golf team bounced back in a big, big way Thursday.
The Tigers, who lost at NorthWood Tuesday evening in the league opener, shot a season best 172 to throttle Elkhart Memorial in Northern Lakes Conference play.
Senior Nikki LaLonde captured medalist honors for the second straight match to lead Warsaaw. LaLonde fired a 40 on the Stonehenge Golf Club layout.
Memorial shot 258 in the varsity league contest.
Elizabeth Meadows turned in another strong outing too for the Tigers as the senior shot 42.
Alexis Manwaring fired a 44 and Kristen Watson shot 46 as the Tigers improved to 8-1 overall and 2-1 in the NLC. Aarshia Jain completed the varsity lineup with a 58.
The Warsaw junior varsity squad also shot a season best total with a team score of 224. Elkhart Memorial did not field a JV team.
Madi Graham paced the JV Tigers with a 50. Miranda Domiano shot 56 and Page Desenberg 57 for Warsaw. Lauren Shaffner came in with a 61 and Morgen Fuentes 65. The JV Tigers are now 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the NLC.
Warsaw hosts NLC foes Goshen and Northridge on Tuesday at Stonehenge at 5 p.m.
Netters Roll Past Crimson Chargers
The Warsaw boys tennis team began defense of its Northern Lakes Conference title Thursday with a rout.
The host Tigers lost just a total of two games on the five varsity courts in blanking Elkhart Memorial 5-0 in NLC play.
Warsaw coach Rick Orban, who saw his team lost 4-1 at home Tuesday to a strong South Bend St. Joseph squad, shuffled his lineup again.
The trio of Sam Rice, Will Petro and Evan Miller all won by 6-0, 6-0 finals at the three singles positions for the Tigers.
Kyle Wettschurack teamed with Nic Jansen to win 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles. The No. 2 doubles team of Nikos Schlitt and Caleb Ray won 6-2, 6-0.
Warsaw won 8-0 in JV action. Singles winners for the Tigers were Andrew Gauger, Justin Stout, David Homme, Caleb DeBoest, Drew McCollom and Chris Stichter. Winning in doubles play were the teams of Ryan Wettschurack and Christopher Herendeen and Cole Baker and Tim Rata.
Warsaw improves to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the NLC in varsity competition. The Tigers play at NLC foe Goshen Tuesday.
Girls Soccer Squad Nipped By NorthWood
The Warsaw girls soccer team came out on the short end of a 2-1 final at Northern Lakes Conference foe NorthWood Thursday.
The host Panthers led 1-0 at halftime on a goal by Kaitlyn Heckaman in the 20th minute. Regan Beck assisted on the score.
NorthWood took a 2-0 lead in the 49th minute as Val Ostrowski found the net, off an assist from Heckaman.
Warsaw broke through in the 64th minute as standout Brooklyn Jackson scored to make it 2-1.
NorthWood had an 8-7 edge in shots.
NorthWood won the JV contest by a 3-0 final.
Warsaw, now 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the NLC, hosts defending state champion Mishawaka Marian Saturday at 10 a.m. The Tigers then play at NLC foe Goshen on Tuesday.
