Jackson Lifts Tigers In NLC Thriller
WARSAW – The Warsaw girls soccer team opened conference play Tuesday night in thrilling fashion.
Brooklyn Jackson’s goal with just four minutes to play snapped a tie and sent the host Tigers past Plymouth 3-2 in the Northern Lakes Conference lid lifter.
Jackson’s second goal of the contest came off a rebound off a penalty kick by teammate Elizabeth VanWormer.
Warsaw earned the conference win after Plymouth had rallied twice to tie the match. The league opener was tied 2-2 at halftime.
“Wow, what a game,” said first-year Warsaw coach Peter Lucht in an email Tuesday night. “It was a total team win. I’m blessed to have such a phenomenal group of young ladies.”
Jackson has already netted six goals in the first three games of the season for the Tigers, who won a sectional title in 2012.
VanWormer had a goal and an assist for Warsaw in the win. Danielle Hutcherson collected two assists for the Tigers.
Senior star keeper Abby Schue made six saves in goal for the winners.
Warsaw, now 2-1 overall on the season, outshot the Pilgrims 26-14.
Lucht praised the play of three freshmen starters, Rachel McClelland, Breck Jackson and Julie Frazzetta, for their efforts in the win. The Tiger coach also noted the key contributions from Vanessa Malagon, Zoe Smyth, Pam Miller and Clair Snodgrass.
The Warsaw junior varsity team opened its season with a 1-0 win Tuesday evening.
Warsaw returns to NLC action at NorthWood Thursday evening. The Tigers then host defending state champion Mishawaka Marian Saturday.
