Wawasee Sports Wrap – Aug. 26
After taking one on the chin Saturday against Concord, Wawasee decided to return the favor on visiting Hamilton Monday in Syracuse.
In the first-ever meeting between the two clubs, Wawasee put a whipping on Hamilton, 10-1, in boys soccer. The win erases the sting of a 10-0 loss to Concord Saturday in the Northern Lakes Conference opener.
Five players found the goal sheet for Wawasee, led by four goals from Rasmus Rich and two goals each from Carter Jones and Ricky Camargo. Addison Dumford and Fernando Camargo each added a goal. The Camargo brothers, along with third brother Luis, combined for five assists and Javier Lopez also added a helper to the sheet.
“Great result. Great way to bounce back from Concord,” stated Wawasee head coach Jordan Sharp. “We are heading in the right direction.”
Wawasee (1-1-1) will host area power West Noble Thursday.
Volleyball Keeps Rolling
After a huge weekend in winning the Elwood Invite, the Wawasee varsity volleyball team kept rolling Monday night with a 25-13, 25-21, 25-18 win over visiting Lakeland.
Wawasee (6-1) jumped out to a 20-4 lead in the first game and then a 14-4 lead in game two in a combination of assertiveness and a host of Lakeland passing errors. The Lakers would show some resolve, tying game two at 15 and then taking a 21-17 lead, only for Wawasee to run off the final eight points of the game, capped with a pair of Alli Ousley aces.
Ousley finished with a game-high six aces and led the Lady Warriors with 19 assists. Hunter Gaerte had another big game for Wawasee with 14 digs, 10 kills and three aces, and punctuated game three with a big block to bring on match point.
Kasey Napier added five aces and four kills and Aly Anderson chipped in 23 digs on the defensive side.
“A good win to back up the tournament on Saturday,” said Wawasee head coach Jeff Phillips. “We need to keep improving every night. Alli Ousley is beginning to take control and lead our offense which is a big step.”
The Wawasee JV put the wraps on its fifth win in six tries with a 25-18, 25-22 win against Lakeland. Skylar Janda, Liz Hardy and Seaquinn Bright all had three kills to lead the offense while Bright and Ashley Beer combined for 20 digs.
Wawasee will head out to Albion Tuesday night for a visit with Central Noble.
