Warsaw Tennis Team Rolls In Opener
WARSAW – The highly-anticipated start to the boys tennis season arrived Tuesday evening for Warsaw.
The host Tigers wasted no time in rolling to the first win of the 2013 campaign either.
Warsaw blanked Westview 5-0 in the season opener at WCHS.
Coach Rick Orban’s Tigers, who went 12-3 and won a sectional title last season, lost a total of just 12 games versus the Warriors.
Senior Kyle Wettschurack, now in his third season at No. 1 for the Tigers, led the way with a 6-3, 6-2 victory.
The Tigers completed the singles sweep as junior Sam Rice posted a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 2 and classmate Caleb Ray notched a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 3.
Warsaw also won both doubles matches easily. The tandem of Nic Jansen and Will Petro prevailed 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 and the duo of Christopher Herendeen and Nikos Schlitt won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2.
Warsaw won the JV contest by a 9-0 final. Winners in singles play for the Tigers were Andrew Gauger, Justin Stout, David Homme, Tim Rata and Mario Hernandez. Also victorious were the JV doubles teams of Ryan Wettschurack and Cole Baker, Caleb DeBoest and Drew McCollom, Wesley Shuler and Hudson Snyder and Keeton Barton and Jean-Luc Baldwin.
The Tigers host Huntington North today (Aug. 21) and then entertain powerful Penn in a key clash Thursday.
