Lakers Prove Historic In Win
LAGRANGE – For the first time in Lakeland’s history, the girls soccer program could stand tall in its season opener against Wawasee. A seven-goal outburst was more than enough to pick up its first win against the visiting Lady Warriors, 7-0, Monday night in the lid lifter for both programs.
Wawasee had won the previous seven matchups with Lakeland, outscoring the Lakers 30-3 in those seven games dating back to 2006.
Goal scorers for Lakeland were not listed in the varsity contest. The Wawasee JV did earn a win, 4-1, behind a pair of goals each from Leigh Ann Shrack and Samantha Valle.
“We got away from areas we have been emphasizing in practice, and it cost us,” stated Wawasee head coach Doug Heinisch. “We need to continue to focus on making fundamental plays. The potential is there as we played well the first 10 minutes of each half. We need to sustain for longer periods.”
Wawasee (0-1) will get its next crack on the pitch Wednesday when it hosts West Noble. First kick is slated for 5 p.m.
