UPDATE: Gas Leak Controlled
NIPSCO’s Director of External Communications, Nick Meyer, tells StaceyPageOnline.com that he does not anticipate problems going much into this evening as a result of a gas leak on West Lake Street.
Warsaw fire fighters were called at about 1:10 p.m. to West Lake Street near Melody Acres subdivision where Meyer now says a company working on the sewer system had a wall in a manhole collapse and that jarred a 6-inch plastic gas line. Initially Meyer said the contractors did not call NIPSCO to have the gas lines marked, but after further investigation he reported that markings in this instance were not a factor.
Lake Street at Leiter Road and at Hepler Drive were closed at the onset of the leak and fire fighters evacuated Subway, the Sunoco gas station and the United Methodist Church in the area. Barricades were placed at the scene to prevent traffic in the area, but the neighborhoods were not evacuated.
A NIPSCO crew is on scene. The gas has been shut off and, according to Meyer, the area is now safe. Two customers, including the Sunoco gas station and the Time Out, are without gas service while the repairs are made. West Lake Street is now re-opened.
