Deborah Jean Nelson
Deborah Jean Nelson, 53, of Syracuse, Ind., passed away at 8:35 a.m., Monday, July 1, 2013, at her residence.
She was born on March 1, 1960, to Edward and Darlene ‘Dee’ (DuPlain) Shannon in Canton, Ohio. On Dec. 17, 1988, she married Jack Nelson in Canton. They moved 17 years ago to Syracuse.
Deborah was a graduate of Jackson High School in Canton. She was a graduate of IUPFW and received her master’s degree from Ball State University. She was a kindergarten teacher at Syracuse Elementary School. In Canton, she had worked at Head Start as a teacher and principal. Deborah loved working with children and had taught Vacation Bible School. She was a very caring and Godly woman. She attended Nappanee Missionary Church for the last 12 years and was a table leader at Wednesday night Oasis. Deborah enjoyed being with her family and friends and spending time at the lake. She also enjoyed tennis and walking.
Deborah is survived by her husband; a son: Chett (April) Nelson, Goshen, Ind.; daughter: Stephanie (Craig) Nelson-Cormany, Colorado; grandchildren: Legend Hurd; Julia, Jenna and Jaedyn Nelson; her parents; a brother: Michael (Yoko) Shannon, Okinawa, Japan; sister: Michelle ‘Shelly’ (Russ) Satterfield, Lake Mohawk, Ohio; grandmother: Sophia DuPlain, Louisville, Ohio; and nieces: Erika and Eileen Shannon; Danielle and Jessica Satterfield.
Visitation will take place from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 3, at the Nappanee Missionary Church Chapel and from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 5 at the church. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am, Friday, July 5, at the church. Pastor Dave Engbrecht and Pastor Justin Lamason will officiate. Burial will be in Olive Cemetery, Wakarusa, Ind. Memorial contributions may be given to Syracuse Elementary School.
