Wawasee Flotilla Theme: ‘Wide World Of Sports’
What better theme for an event held on the largest natural lake than one dealing with sports. The 2013 Wawasee Flotilla theme will be “Wide World of Sports” with this year’s event to be held on Saturday, July 6.
What sport, team or athletes will you see that day? Could there be some famous broadcasters (imposters of course) making their way to the lake? Or sports superstars making a stop?
What sporting events will be featured or new sports created. Could some of the local sports teams, athletes be participating? Or even area teams? Who knows as many individuals have their thinking caps in place trying to win the coveted Commodore’s Trophy.
You don’t have to live on Wawasee to participate, all you need is imagination and a boat capable of traveling 7 miles per hour, so get some friends together or make it a family fun day and put together your version of “Wide World of Sports.”
There will also be an antique/wooden boat parade again leading this year’s flotilla.
This year’s parade will line up in front of Wawasee Spink Condominium at 1 p.m. with the parade starting at 1:30 p.m. and traveling clockwise around the lake. Awards will be presented immediately following the parade at the Wawasee Spink pier.
In addition to the Commodore’s Trophy, the Wawasee Property Owners Association and DNR awards will be presented to the top three floats. Awards will also be given out for neighborhood, youth, Wawasee history, most patriotic, commercial/business and non-profit. An award will also be given for the best on-shore display.
Those not wanting to decorate a boat are encouraged to help in the celebration by participating from shore. Individuals and/or neighborhoods are encouraged to decorate piers with the theme. Awards will be presented for these winners.
T-shirts carrying this year’s flotilla logo will be available to purchase at Griffith’s Marine, NewMarket, Main Channel Marine and Team Tuttle Mortgage.
A fundraiser to raise funds for the 2014 Wawasee Flotilla will be held from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, with a three-hour cruise on the S.S. Lilly Pad II. Lisa Hill is handling the tickets and can be contacted at [email protected] for ticket information.
Don’t forget to be eligible for an award, register by Friday, July 5, by contacting Holly Tuttle, chairwoman, at 574-457-3775 or by email at [email protected].
