Syracuse Public Library Announcements

Main Street Syracuse in 1910 is one of hundreds of pictures that can be viewed in the Indiana Memory project. Interested community members can help add to the project by scanning in more pictures or by loaning pictures and historically significant materials.

Fifteen Friends members met on Thursday, June 13, to elect new officers and make plans for the year. The president, secretary and treasurer are Allyson Ellis, Michael Brower and Ruth Judy. Past members will be receiving a letter outlining upcoming Friends activities, and are encouraged to include their email when they return their dues.
The Friends will have a committee meeting on Monday, July 1, to prepare for the annual book sale. Members are asked to contact Becky Brower if they are available to help with setup and the sale on Wednesday, July 31 through Saturday, Aug. 3. The annual book sale is the group’s only fundraiser. Becky can be reached by email at [email protected] or by phone at 574-457-3022.
Activities
The Syracuse Library has a busy week of activities. At 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 25, everyone is invited to come for Worm Farming with the Dig into Reading children’s programs. At 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 26, teens who bring a tee shirt can recycle it into a bag with a little sewing and decorating. In addition to these programs, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Friday, June 27, the Friday Films event will be taking place.
The Syracuse Library and the Syracuse Historical Museum are collaborating on an informational program to show potential volunteers the methods for digitizing historic pictures and documents and sharing them on Indiana Memories. Indiana Memories can be viewed from links on both the library and museum websites. The project is funded by federal monies and administered by the Indiana State Library. The funding paid for a person to place into the program materials that the library and museum own. That funding expired in April so continuation of the project must continue with volunteers.
The two-part program begins at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 26, with a demonstration of the scanning process. The second hour includes a light snack and a demonstration of the use of the microfilm reader and other historic preservation sites. Members of the community are encouraged to bring photographs, slides, post cards, historical documents, maps and other items to the meeting or the Syracuse-Wawasee Historical Museum.
