First of all, I want to give a big round of applause to the entire Wagon Wheel Theatre family! This was an excellent show for kids and adults of all ages! The show was funny, very entertaining and the music was terrific! All of your talents, creativeness and dedication shined bright on the stage last night.
Shrek the Musical follows the storyline of the movie very well. The humor that we all love from the movie was depicted on stage perfectly, which resulted in several laugh out loud moments by all.
The music, sets, costumes, actors and the characters that they portrayed were all right on. Shrek (Matthew Janisse) with his accent and mannerisms, or lack thereof, and Donkey (Jared Howelton) was annoyingly hysterical, just like the movie. Eddie Murphy would be proud.
Fiona (Alexandria Howley) was beautiful and loveable right from the start. But the stand out performance goes to Lord Faurquaad (David Schlumpf) as he makes you laugh in pretty much every scene in which he appears … he was fantastic! I must point out the professional gaffe recovery from David. One of the cast members accidentally tripped and broke one of the set pieces and David played it off as if it were part of the show with fantastic improvisation.
Dragon even makes a wonderful appearance – and all of your favorite fairytale gang is there along the way, including Pinocchio and Gingy. The choreography of all the characters was fun and energetic from beginning to end, continuously keeping you entertained.
Shrek the Musical is playing now through June 15 at the Wagon Wheel Theatre in Warsaw. I say that it is a “must see!” to kick off the summer season.
